Dear Parents/Carers,

During transition, we have read The Matchbox Diary. This book is about a grandfather who has kept treasures throughout his life to keep as memories. He shares these with his Granddaughter.

Over the holidays, we would like the children to collect treasures from their adventures, as well as items that show who they are. These will then be brought back into school in September as a way of getting to know each other. The items do not need to be expensive. It could be a shell, a ticket, a small drawing, or a written note. Don't worry if it doesn't fit in the box!

We look forward to seeing what they bring in and getting to know the children better.

One of our first topics in September will be The Romans. To help your child prepare for this we have a few suggestions of activities that you could do together that would help:

  1. Go to the cinema and watch the film- Rotten Romans

  2. Visit the library and choose a related book to read together or try one of these:

  • 'Defenders' Dark Arena'- Tom Palmer

  • 'Rotten Romans'- Horrible Histories

  • 'The Diary of Dorkious Maximus' - Tim Collins

  • 'Romans on the Rampage' – Jeremy Strong

We also plan to have a day where we dress up as Roman civilians in the first few weeks, so sourcing and saving a white/ cream bed sheet would be useful for this.

It is also important that the children continue to practise their times tables using TT Rockstars as much as possible. They should be as fluent as they can when they come back to school.

Thank you for your support,

The Year 4 team.
